About Santa Fe New Mexico

In Spanish, “Santa” means “Holy” and “Fe” means “Faith”. Therefore the name Santa Fe translates to “Holy Faith”. This city of about 62,000 people sits at an elevation of 6,996 feet. It is the second oldest city in the U.S. (discovered in 1607) behind St. Augustine, Florida which was discovered in 1565.

Santa Fe was the capital of the “Kingdom of New Mexico” as claimed for Spain by the Spanish explorer, Coronado. Santa Fe continued as one of Spain’s provincial seats until 1821 when Mexico attained its independence from Spain. In 1848, the territory of New Mexico was acquired from Mexico by the United States. In 1912, New Mexico became America’s 47th state and Santa Fe was designated its capital city.

Santa Fe sets at the base of the “Sangre de Cristo” mountains. It’s awesome beauty; cultural attractions and art colony crafts draw an influx of new residents and vacationers from around the world.
